The Adventures of Chaplain Hogan, Pt. 1

Received this email from my love tonight:

Let me tell you a little story I like to call “Ode to a treadmill at sea.”
There’s this really cool room just beneath the bridge that we call the cardio bridge. It’s a long skinny room with windows all the way across the front just like the bridge above it where the Captain drives the ship. It has a bunch of workout equipment like bikes, stairclimber, and a treadmill. Well, who wouldn’t enjoy gazing over the bow of the ship, watching the waves on the open Pacific Ocean? At sea, there are swells that tend to rock the ship pretty significantly, but I won’t let that keep me from getting my cardio on. So, I’m running with my ipod on, watching the ocean, doing pretty well adjusting to the rocking motion of the ship. Suddenly, I think I see a humongous whale right in front of us and I forget for a minute that I am running 7 mph on a one and a half foot wide strip of rubber. Needless to say I snapped out of my amazement when I stepped off the belt and heard both feet smack the electrical box on the wall behind me. I acted on my lightening fast reflexes and latched on to the treadmills handles and pulled myself up, narrowly averting disaster. Of course, my heart was now beating faster than it was while running. It scared the mess out of me! There’s got to be a sermon illustration in this somewhere! Maybe “keeping your eye on the prize (not the whale),” or “staying on the straight and narrow.” Maybe I should try the bike. Thought you’d get a kick out of this.

awww Sarah this is so wonderful that he can write out his happenings for you. It reminds me of the letters Ronald Reagan used to write Nancy Reagan during his presidency ( or life ) that I have in a book called I love you, Ronnie. I love letters.

I can't stop laughing. I just keep picturing Phillip trying to explain who he got injured watching a whale while running on a treadmill. Who would believe that story?!?!

Welcome to the club, Phillip. I fell off the treadmill once and I promise to you that I never went back to that gym.

Phillip, I am in awe of you and Sarah...watching both of you go from teenagers to adults has been a joy and reading about the adventure that you are taking for the glory of the Lord is so inspiring. I like the titles for future sermons...make sure you write it all down. Here's hoping you can come back to visit in Beaufort, SC. God Bless.
